(Many things to many people)
In electricity, service means that something is supplied, connected. In economics, service is a nonmaterial good that can be exchanged for money or for another service. In lips, service is what you said to your mother that got you your mouth washed out with soap.
In CHURCH, we think of service as something we do when we gather on Sunday mornings. But this is something that confuses the purpose of what we do at that time of the week. The best word here would be: MASS. But that is too catholic sounding so a better alternative is to call it what it is: WORSHIP.
And when we get to THEOLOGY, service is what you do for others because of what God has done for you. It is not required for SALVATION. Instead, it is one way we respond after being saved. Service calls us beyond ourselves to recognize and actually do something to meet the needs of another.
