Do any of you remember making up May baskets and taking them to the neighbors? Putting them on the porch, knowing on the door and then running around the corner? Picking some of your mom’s beautiful flowers, (or dandelions, lol)? I don’t think our neighbors cared one iota if they were flowers or dandelions.
Just the smile that came to their lips was very uplifting. It made their day that someone remembered them and it always made mine to see their smile. This just isn’t celebrated today like it used to be. I wonder why? Have we all gotten so busy that we do not have the time for our neighbors like we used to? Or, is it because of the way society is today, and the Covid fear that everyone is to just keep to themselves? Whatever the reason, in my opinion that is very sad. I always had Caleb and Madilyn make up little May baskets and we would distribute them to our neighbors back in Lucas. They loved it. Some of the old time routines were there for a reason. Like going to Church every Sunday. It used to be that families would dress up in their finest. We would go to Church, worship God and visit with our church family. To me that was the start of my week! The beginning. To this day, it is the start of my week, not the ending. If I missed a Sunday, my week would not start out the same. To me something was always missing. It was almost like I was walking on a crooked path or something. I can’t explain it. Something was just missing.
Families today have so much going on. Their children are in activities that sometimes take up the whole weekend or they travel quite a distance on Saturday’s to an event. That can be exhausting! Do you also miss the interaction that you have with your church family on Sunday’s? Well, I will be starting church services here at Christ Lutheran the first and third Wednesday’s of the month at 6:30p.m. Hopefully this schedule will work out better for some.
See you soon, Pastor Sue Ellen
