May Day Reflections

May Day Reflections

May 4, 2026 Featured, Pastor's Corner

Happy May Day! Well, as I am writing this it’s almost May Day. I remember as a child our mother would help us fashion baskets out of recycled paper (my mother grew up in the dirty thirties. They never threw anything away. Everything was recycled. Depression era also.) Anyway, she would help my siblings and myself to fashion baskets out of newspaper. Staple a handle on them and then we would pick flowers and go put them on our neighbor’s front porch. Of course, we would knock, place them, and then run. As if they didn’t see us. It made them happy and we were almost always rewarded with a plate full of cookies the next day. That’s a win, win in my books! When our grandchildren were living right across the alley from us, I carried on this tradition with them. They loved doing it, and our neighbors loved it as well. Many of them thought that it no longer happened. You do not see this tradition being carried out anymore. I wonder why? Have we gotten too busy, or just that those old traditions have been forgotten. There are a lot of traditions that are no longer practiced and some of them sadden me. I do realize that most families’ lives are so busy and so full of events that time gets away from them. I would have to say myself included.

We are still in the Easter season where we are celebrating the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is through His sacrifice that we are awakened to the fact that He loved us more than His own life. He gave us His all so that we might have life. Eternal life with Him and our Father in heaven. This gift basket that was given to us freely includes not only eternal life but, forgiveness and salvation. We are forgiven each and every day, if we just repent and ask for forgiveness. Not just on May Day. What do we have to give in return for this wonderful basket of gifts? Our thanks, our praise, and adoration? Some of our precious time? Do we have one hour a week to spend with Him, in return for eternity?

Happy May Day to you all and God’s Blessings be upon you all.

+ Pastor Sue Ellen
